I remember when me and 3 friends decided to play against the hardest AI. None of us were good at RTS. I was the Orks and I found out the fine, fine upgrade that gave you free slugga boys. The AI had overwhelmed my friends so they had begun building bases behind mine.

My base was literally a wall of 'barracks' pumping out an endless green flood. The ai had no problem killing my units but they just came out in such vast numbers they refilled just as fast. Took us some 60 minutes until my friends had enough resources to break the siege with their super units.

It was awesome! I don't get it, I really don't.

There have been great revivals of older and seemingly dying genres such as arena and old school fps, which Doom and Overwatch were basically the forefront of that revival. Then there was the revival of crpgs lead by divinity and pillars of eternity. The revival of puzzle platformers lead by shovel knight. Why is it so fucking hard to revive RTS?

Do they think the community wants yet another esports focused game? No, we have enough cunting esports as it is no one wants more and its been proven time and time again you can't make an esports game and expect it to become an esport. Is it really that hard to revive older RTS? Instead of making trash like this what did people really want?

A HD version of dark crusade. More factions more units tyranids in a DOW 1 style game just with more polish. Just give me HD red alert or HD dark crusade or just DOW2 with more factions and base building and larger maps. Jesus fuck a reskin of company of heroes with dawn of war models would have been better. Im ranting here and my point isnt clear but i dont understand whats so hard about reviving RTS, just dont make an inferior version of SC2 and just make a fun RTS that people want to play with their friends.

What is it with this esports bullshit, I thought the industry was over this petty shit. I don't think remaking and reviving the RTS genre would be any harder than the other genres you listed. The problem is everyone has esport on the brain. Ladder, and esport, esport and ladder.

Gotta get in that esport scene, right? That's the problem. They're trying so hard to make the next big thing in esports that they're sacrificing the things that made RTS fun. An engaging single-player campaign with an interesting story and characters ALA Tiberian Sun and Warcraft III? Nope, the aforesaid single player campaign is just to teach and introduce you to the multiplayer to get you into the esport.

The tutorial if you will. Remember, esport is the goal!

When Blizzard sat down to make Overwatch and Bethesda sat down to make Doom, neither were thinking esport. Blizzard was thinking how zany, over-the-top, silly and fun can we make our shooter, while Bethesda was thinking about the best ways to shoot a demon in the face.

And, I think they both succeeded. I think we'll have our revival in the RTS genre when devs stop obsessing over esports. Hell, they might just create their fuggin esport just by trying to make a fun, balanced and engaging game instead. Look at Warcraft III. The worst thing about 'esport-oriented RTS' is that (at least IMO) they're super boring to watch. They're stale, predictable, nothing wild or crazy can happen because the game has to be so strictly balanced. The most fun RTS to watch, I think, are the ones that turned into one organically.
